The latest footage from the Steven Spielberg directed fantasy actionner based on the popular novel from Ernest Cline, has just dropped on the web, and it’s a doozy.
Fans of sci-fi and fantasy past and present will be sure to get a kick out of the film’s Oasis, a virtual reality where each external user can adopt his or her own avatar, interacting with millions of others in fantastical locales and game-based venues.
While readers have been split between loving or hating it (not everyone lives expressing themselves in movie quotes and pop culture references, after all), there’s still a decent premise at play: it’s 2045, and most of humanity’s been forced to live in pretty desperate conditions due to overcrowding and abuse of resources.
Thanks to the OASIS, the interactive VR realm where folks can log in and escape their problems, the stakes have been raised, and then some: the inventor of the VR venue (played by Mark Rylance) passes on but leaves behind a message that an Easter Egg within the VR environment is up for grabs to the first who finds it, thereby granting he or she the keys to it all, including the inventor’s half-trillion dollar fortune.
Young Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan, X-Men Apocalypse) is an idealistic young man whose skills at solving the OASIS’s puzzles and games makes him a possible contender in winning it all.
Then again, corporate forces also have their eye on the considerable prize and ownership of the virtual world, and seek to use their own robust resources to beat young Watts to the contest’s endgame.
Here’s the footage, keep your eye out for as many references as possible. Trust me, blink and you’ll definitely miss some…and that’s just from a two-minute trailer:
